Lake County Serves a Nickel Beer

In an attempt to boost attendance, the Cleveland Indians sold beer for just five cents on June 4, 1974. Needless to say, Nickel Beer Night went down in infamy.

Bucking historical precedent, the Lake County Captains, the low Single-A affiliate of the Indians, tried it again (with a few stipulations) on Cleveland Sports History night on Aug. 2. The beer was sold in 5 oz. cups and only from 6-7 p.m. Due to legal restrictions in Ohio, the team could only sell two discounted beers at any one time, so extra thirsty fans had to continuously re-join the line.

“The whole genesis came about when we wanted to do a sports trivia night,” said Brad Seymour, General Manager of the Captains, before the promotion. “We figured out it was the anniversary of the Nickel Beer Night. We wanted to do it but do it responsibly. We’re advertising it. It’s not going t be a drunkfest out here. It’ll be fun but we’re doing it responsibly. Certainly the big hook is the nickel beers, but it doesn’t stop there. It continues throughout the night.”

Aside from the boozy hijinks, the night included highlights from Cleveland sports history and appearances from famous Clevelanders in the sports world, such as John Adams, the famous drummer in the Indians’ bleachers. The Captains also had some fun with games in between innings and reenacted some famous moments in Cleveland sports history.

“It’s paying tribute to the many good players that have played here and the moments that have taken place here,” Seymour said. “It’s a fun all-around promotion.”
